As a driver, you've likely seen a Portable Variable Message Sign (PVMS) on the side of the road. During the summer months, as worksites and events increase, the need for these message boards becomes essential. By transmitting real-time messages to drivers, they play a significant role in road safety.
At CTS, we offer a variety of PVMS options, and one of the most frequently asked questions from our customers is: “How do I choose the appropriate PVMS for our needs?” Here are the most important factors to consider:
1. Location: When shopping for a PVMS, the first question to ask yourself is where and how you intend to use it. The PVMS you place on a municipal road or near a parking lot for a Maple Leafs game will not be the same as the one you'd use on a sidewalk or near a construction site. Knowing where your board will be installed is the first step toward making an informed choice.
2. Size: Yes, size does matter in this instance! Each sign has a specific display capacity of lines and characters. You must consider the types of messages you will display and the audience they are intended for. On a 70 km/h road where drivers tend to speed, your message will need to be short and displayed on a larger board. In contrast, on a sidewalk or in a slower traffic area, drivers can easily focus on multiline messages.
3. Autonomy and Control: Although we offer the option of including a cellular modem, all our PVMS units can come equipped with one. Modem communication via our management software allows you to control your sign remotely. Whether it's to check the remaining battery life or to edit your message, there's no need to move!
It's up to you to decide whether this option is necessary.
Once you've answered these questions, you are ready to make an informed decision on your purchase or rental. If you're still unsure, no worries—our team is here to help you!
